GEODYN REGISTERS THE Mw 8.3 EARTHQUAKE IN CHILE

The 2015/09/16 Mw 8.3 earthquake with epicenter near Illapel (Central Chile) has been clearly recorded at the GEODYN observatory. The upper panel shows the up/down motion recorded by the broad-band sensor, while the lower panel shows the energy distribution amongst the different frequency ranges (reddish colours for large energy). White arrows show the arrival of the main aftershocks following the main event. As their amplitude is much lower than for the main event, the aftershocks cannot be observed in the seismic trace, but are clearly identified in the lower panel.

Also note that the variations in seismic energy observed as yellow bands in the 2-8 Hz frequency range are independent from the Chile earthquake and are related to large discharge variations in the Aragon River after significant rainfalls.
